Time is running out for Canada Post and its employees to find common ground before a strike could be called and mail services put on hold.
Some 48,000 urban postal workers are in a legal position to strike as of 11:59 p.m. ET Thursday, which they are poised to do if their union cannot come to a deal with their employer.
The union met with Canada Post President Deepak Chopra on Wednesday, as well as the Crown corporation's chief negotiator, Mark MacDonell, but the two sides did not reach an agreement.
According to a statement issued by the Canadian Union of Postal Workers on Wednesday evening, Canada Post "has not responded to any of the new positions advanced by the union in our final offer except to say no."

The union representing some 48,000 postal workers has told its members to prepare for strike action beginning at 11:59 p.m. ET.
In a statement released mid-morning Thursday, the Canadian Union of Postal Workers said the Winnipeg local will be the first to walk off the job.
"Winnipeg has been chosen as the location for the first strike activity because it was the first city to be impacted by Canada Post's modernization program," the union said, explaining that the initial 24-hour job action is intended to "encourage Canada Post Corporation to abandon their proposals for significant concessions and instead negotiate solutions."
In an interview with CTV News Channel, the national director of the CUPW in the prairie region said that means both mail sorting and delivery will grind to a halt.

I watched a Canada Post guy get mail from a drop box today. He filled his plastic tub thing, then stomped his foot in it to push down the letters so he could add more. Yeah, Im thinking this union gets zero support from me.
